New Year

Has a new year started already? I bet I could have never told the difference had it not been for the new calendars replacing old ones in my home. Of course, I admit January 1 is special as compared to the rest of its 364 similitude. It’s a day when new vows and resolutions are laid down, when you find all family restaurants and picnic spots smothered by large crowds, a day exclusively for midnight messages (that often get stuck in the choked cellular network) and pouring phone calls from far flung relatives.

Except for the kick-off day of the year, rest of the days are normally wrapped in routine modus operandi, in such a manner that 2009 or 2010, life is the same unless you have a strict resolution reminding you at every point that a New Year has been ushered in. Well, for many of us, the day of getting placed brought in more novelties than did the official New Year Day.

Talking of resolutions, I have seen a lot of people who profess laying down hard-and-fast rules for themselves as part of their New Year resolutions, be it sticking to a strict diet plan or cutting down expenses or any other ‘Say No to’ regime. But considering my previous years’ fiascos in keeping resolutions, I decided not to incur any more torture on myself and sidled away from keeping any this year.

One piece of advice considering what I have experienced so far. If you have friends who are on some dieting plans, then you ought to exercise a little precaution if you happen to go out with them and land in front of their favorite eatery. That’s when their taste buds take over the mind for no fault of theirs, and then they would frantically ask you if relaxing the diet decree for a while would be ok, as if you were their life’s arbiter and you imposed the rules on them in the first place. Now you stand there in a quandary, a ‘no’ to them could mean enduring their moans and pouting, and a ‘yes’ could lighten things up for a while, yet you would be the one to be held responsible if they increase by a gram in the future :P. The best way out is to leave the predicament on them only and sneak out of it.

In any case, New Year is in, if you have felt it yet or not. So my best wishes are with you.. Hope the year ushers in joys for all of you, and your heartfelt wishes come true (whoa that rhymes.. maybe I should try my hands at a genre other than prose) And not to forget, hope you all succeed in keeping your resolutions, if any.
